I do seem to recall some tenderness for a few months that was uncomfortable but not like the neuroma pain was. I'd suspect that too will heal up as the nerve heals. Best wishes! Wondering if you had a similar experience at all - is it just a matter of months for the rest of the swelling / healing process to take place? It doesn't hurt to walk at this point but I'm worried I'm causing this bruising. Any recollection of your experience with this? After week 6 I started running my normal 5 miles without any pain or trouble.
I’m at week 8 now. Lots of intense shooting pain when I manipulate under my foot arch but I’m being patient. Nerve recovery is along and I suspect many of the horror stories are from people who expect full recovery at 4 months. My scar is already barely perceptible and I can walk and exercise normally. honeynettles.blogspot.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08366085811567919758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7606056202798955033.post-31816297990290972552020-01-08T06:50:24.438-08:002020-01-08T06:50:24.438-08:00Is it hard to get use to? I am 20 days post op. My doctor is a ...Hi everyone. I am 20 days post op. My doctor is a foot and ankle orthopedist at a sports clinic. The surgery was about an hour, and I was told you elevate as much as possible for 2 weeks. He said I could walk in the boot right away, of course the first 2 days were slow and agonizing. After that it was a bit difficult and slow but not excruciating. At day 6 I started walking short distances without the boot but with the bandages on (7 feet or so) on occasion and walked 5 blocks with the boot. I also started taking baby steps barefoot once or twice a day. The bruising lasted until about the 14th day post surgery. I am bruise free now. My external stitches are gone but the internal ones are still dissolving.
As far as pain, only days 2 and 3 were bad in that my body would not even let me press my foot down to see just how painful it was. I went off pain meds day 3. After that it was painful but not terrible- think a bad bruise. I now have a little bit of surgical pain left, but I feel a neuroma type pain if I handle or massage near the incision site. The skin above it also feels really raw and tender, like a very bad sunburn.
The scar is healing so much better than I expected. The doctor really outdid himself there. The incision itself looks like no more than a scrape, and the stitch entry points didn’t leave a scar, unlike other times I’ve needed stitches where I look like a pirate.
The doctor claimed I could be back running at two weeks, but it was too optimistic. I did use the elliptical at two weeks and yesterday night practiced some very slow and controlled ballet raises and did a few kickboxing moves.
I am healing well but very anguish about the stump neuromas I read about. I am using brand new gym shoes which I think is important to avoid introducing bacteria to the area. At night I massage the incision very lightly using an ointment with comfrey and St. John’s Wort.
Hope this helps anyone out there who is getting this surgery!honeynettles.blogspot.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08366085811567919758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7606056202798955033.post-33458412061661683982019-12-15T08:33:11.278-08:002019-12-15T08:33:11.278-08:00That's good to know! Another shoe company, Topo, makes wider toebox shoes similar to Altra but they aren't zero drop (better for some people like me.) I haven't tried the Topo shoes but they look promising.
I'm really glad I did the surgery--it was the right choice for me. I hope you find relief and if you go the surgery route, keep the incision area clean (unlike I did!) :-) Jason Halladayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04420963952950170838noreply@blogger.com
